Match Overview

MORGAN WONDER GOAL SETS UP WIN

Mossley made a great start to their final pre season game taking an early two goal lead against NPL Premier Division neighbours Ashton United at Seel Park on Saturday, thanks to a wonder strike and a penalty by new signing Adam Morgan.

Former Curzon Ashton ace Adam Morgan took just three minutes to get off the mark when he spotted Ashton keeper Dave Carnell off his line and from just inside the Robins half he lofted a fantastic strike over the stranded keeper and into the unguarded net.

Five minutes later Mossley were two up as Ryan Brooke was upended in the box and Adam Morgan fired home his second from the penalty spot.

With new boys Simon Lenighan and Craig Roddan dominant in midfield Mossley were causing a strong Ashton team lots of problems but when Ashton finally did create a chance Dylan Forth responded with a brilliant save to deny Steven Tames as the heavens opened.

The tempo was broken by several injury stoppages in the first half. Paul Marshall limped off for Mossley while Ben Richardson and Ryan Brooke also needed treatment. For Ashton – Liam Tomsett was a casualty five minutes before his replacement Connor Hughes also limped out of the action.

The second half saw the game swing from end to end but it was Mossley who scored again when Simon Lenighan’s mazy run through the heart of the Ashton defence set up Ben Halfacre who stepped his way around the keeper before slotting home.

Ashton pulled a goal back with six minutes remaining as Steven Tames scored from close range after a big deflection aided the visitors and with two minutes left Ashton’s big trialist forward powered home a second goal and Ashton thought they had a chance to salvage a draw with a late half chance but Mossley cleared their lines to take the local bragging rights.
